Avenir is a beautifully balanced typeface by Adrian Frutiger. Frutiger was a renown Swiss typeface designer who has also designed: Frutiger, Neue Frutiger, Humanist 777. He sadly died in 2015 at the proud age of 87.
Identifont is a great website on typography. It has been around since 2000 and is a fun resource on typography. You can identify almost any font by answering a set of questions, which I like to use as a way to discover fonts that I like, almost reversed-engineered. I simply answer the questions based on what I like.
Identifont has also an extensive database on typefaces and typeface designers.
